I started off homebrewing mead back in 2013, and finally made the jump to commercial production a year later. Johnson's Meadery was originally situated in the Yeovil Small Business Centre (next to the football stadium), where it remained until the end of 2015. My original plan of wholesaling mead to local pubs and restaurants wasn't working as anticipated by my market research, so I made the leap into retail. Unfortunately, this came with even more red-tape, and I ran into numerous 3rd-party problems with my website. I resorted to touring markets and events, where the fees (and licences) were high and the footfall low. In the end, Johnson's Meadery had to close, but I paid the duty and kept my stock. My biggest problem was the lack of couriers who would deliver alcohol legally, but with that now solved, it's time to get selling!
These photos show various parts of my business over the years, including my brew-room. I custom built it myself (excluding electrics, of course) specifically for making mead, and I was quite pleased with how it turned out. The sign was hand-painted by me using iridescent paint for a subtle colour shift.
